A British magician and || The Three Aces

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 31st, 2008

The Three Aces is a card trick where the magician places the Ace of Diamonds in the middle of the deck, and the two black Aces (Spades and Clubs) on the top and bottom of the deck. The deck is cut, and all three aces are found together in the middle of the deck.

Method

The magician starts with the Ace of Diamonds on top of the deck, and the other three aces in his hands. When the three cards are shown to the audience, they are arranged so that the center pip on the Ace of Hearts is up side down, and the two black Aces in front of it make a V that makes the bottom of the heart look like the bottom of a diamond. The three cards are set on top of the deck with the Ace of Hearts on top and black Aces below them. The top card pushed into the middle and the next one placed on the bottom, the deck is cut, and the trick is done.

That revealed || Thomas Kalmaku

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 28th, 2008

Thomas Kalmaku is a character in DC Comics, associated with Green Lantern. He was introduced as a young Eskimo engineer at Ferris Aircraft, also the employer of test pilot Hal Jordan. In the Silver Age he was referred to as “Pieface” (a play on Eskimo Pie), however this has not been used for some time. In his early appearances Thomas had a girlfriend named Tegra. They later married, but have since separated.

Kalmaku was one of the few people who knew Hal Jordan’s secret, and kept a journal of Green Lantern’s adventures. In several stories he either assisted the hero, or required rescuing. As a non-costumed sidekick, he served a similar role to Jimmy Olsen, except that Jimmy did not know Superman’s identity.

During the Millennium crossover, Kalmaku was revealed to be one of the “Chosen” who formed the New Guardians. He had the superpower to bring out the best in people. He resides with the team for some time on a small island. When Guy Gardner appears on a boat to take over the team, Thomas tries to calm the situation, as he and the team only wish to help Guy with his obvious anger problems. The situation degenerates and Guy is forcibly removed from the island by the power of Gloss. Later, Tom leaves the team to be with his family.

The graphic novel Legacy: The Last Will and Testament of Hal Jordan focused on Thomas, after Hal’s (several) deaths. In it he went on a final mission on Hal’s behalf, eventually reconstructing the planet Oa and the Great Battery.

Kalmaku has reappeared in Green Lantern #18. It was revealed that Kalmaku is a father, but no information was given about his children. It also was revealed that Kalmaku was about to become an equal partner in Carol Ferris’s aircraft company. It was also mentioned that the Guardians of the Universe once offered Tom a Power Ring, but that he denied them, with a simple “naw.” It had originally been revealed in Legacy that Tom was Hal’s choice to be his replacement.

Tom makes an appearance in Darwyn Cooke’s DC: The New Frontier miniseries (2003-2004), which is an alternate-universe story set in the 1950s. Here, Thomas angrily objects to the name Pieface when Jordan first uses it.

In Amalgam Comics, Thomas Kalmaku is combined with Happy Hogan to form Happy Kalmaku.

Resulted || No overall control

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 28th, 2008

Within the context of local councils of the United Kindgom the term No Overall Control (abbreviated to NOC) refers to where no single party achieves a majority of seats, analogous to a hung parliament. Of the 310 councils who had members up for election in the United Kingdom local elections, 2007, 85 (just over a quarter) resulted in a NOC administration.

Administration in NOC Councils

Typically under the circumstances that no party achieves overall control of a council the largest grouping will form alliances to create an ad hoc governing coalition. Due to local council elections tending to return larger numbers of smaller party (such as the Green Party) and independent candidates this can allow these groups more influence than their numerical representation would otherwise allow.

Examples exist of alliances between the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives (Birmingham City Council), Lib-Dems and Labour and between all major parties and independents or residents associations .

A misplaced alliance can result in a backlash against a party - the Isle of Wight Council elections, 2001, resulted in a NOC administration, prompting the Liberal Democrats and Independents to form a governing group called ‘Island First’ this was met by some consternation by residents and may have led in part to the significant losses suffered by both groups at the 2005 elections at which Lib Dem membership of the council fell from 19 to 5 seats.

Former President of the || Shall We Tell the President?

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 28th, 2008

Shall We Tell The President? is a 1977 book by English author Jeffrey Archer.

In its original version, a plot to kill the president of the United States, Edward Kennedy is foiled by an FBI agent working with the head of the FBI. A love story complicates the plot. The book includes descriptive details of official Washington, for which the author lists sources. After the success of Kane and Abel and The Prodigal Daughter, the new editions of the work featured Florentyna Kane (the first female USA president) rather than Kennedy as the president. In it Archer has Bill Bradley as Kane’s Vice President and keeps making references to Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. In original version with President Kennedy, the Vice President was Dale Bumpers.

Secrets of magic || Ildatch

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 27th, 2008

Ildatch is a book of black magic in the novel The Wishsong of Shannara by Terry Brooks. This book is from the “Old World”, before the Four Lands were shattered by war. Its story was told to Brin Ohmsford by the Druid Allanon. Allanon also told Brin that she was the only one who could destroy it.

The Ildatch was first used by the rebel Druid Brona to increase his knowledge of Old World magic. Brona was subverted by the book’s dark magic and thus became the Warlock Lord. After the Warlock Lord’s defeat at the hands of Shea Ohmsford, Allanon looked for the Ildatch but could not find it. Believing it destroyed when the Skull Kingdom fell, the Ildatch was left to be discovered by a band of Men. These men believed they could control the power of the Ildatch and began to learn its secrets. Like the Warlock Lord, they were unable to resist the book’s dark magic and thus became the Mord Wraiths. After they succumbed to the book’s subversion, they took it deep into the Eastland and hid it within the Maelmord.

When Brin came to destroy the Ildatch, she, too, was subverted by it and was transformed. Her brother, Jair Ohmsford, then found her in a tower in the middle of the Maelmord. There, after a confrontation between subverted sister and determined brother, Brin was able to destroy it with her wishsong.

One page, however, survived as described in the short story “Indomitable”, published as a part of the Legends II compilation, leading to Cogline, Kimber Boh and Jair Ohmsford setting out to destroy the one page that survived.

The Ildatch claims that it was once part of the Word, a collection of secrets that gradually separated from it in time.

Entitled || Markus Nissa Weiss

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 27th, 2008

Markus Nissa Weiss, Hungarian advocate of Reform. In 1792 he had a small business at Pest, and in 1794 he leased an estate near Munkács, where his oppressions gave rise to complaints among the Galician Jews. In 1802 he published a pamphlet entitled “Der Jude wie Er Ist,” in which he pleaded with the Jews to accept the ideas of Reform. This work caused him to be highly criticized by the Hungarian Jews; and in order to defend his person and ideas he issued (Vienna, 1803) another pamphlet, which was entitled “Der Bedrängte Markus Nissa Weiss an die Menschen.” Finding, however, that he could not overcome the antagonistic attitude of his coreligionists, he embraced Christianity.

After his conversion Weiss published his “In Neuerfundenen Tabellen Gegründete Praktische Vortheile der Rechnungskunst,” Buda, 1805; “Der Missverstandene Text und dessen Wahrer Sinn,” ib. 1806. He has further published “Unparteiische Betrachtungen über das Grosse Jüdische Sanhedrin zu Paris” (ib. 1807).

Many TV shows || Dog-show judge

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 25th, 2008

A dog-Breed-show judge is a person that is qualified to evaluate dogs at a conformation show. At small shows, there might be only one judge for all breeds and classes. At larger shows, there might be several judges, with each responsible for only certain breeds or classes.

Qualifications

Because dogs are judged based on how well they conform to their breed’s breed standard, a judge must be intimately familiar with the particular breed’s standard and must be able to analyze the qualities of the dog to determine its relative quality.

Usually a license as a dog judge is granted by either a breed association or a kennel club. The license specifies the different breeds over which the judge is qualified to officiate. Judges may study and, over time, apply for a license to judge a single breed, multiple breeds, or all recognized breeds. A judge who has successfully completed the requirements for judging all of the dog groups is known as a group judge. A judge who is licensed to judge all breeds is often referred to as an “all-rounder”.

Travelling judges

Judges are most commonly licensed specifically to the registry with which they are afilliated (for example, AKC judges judge AKC shows). However, some registries choose to recognize licensed judges from other registries and organizations. Judging outside of one’s country or registry is often an indication of a particular appreciation of that judge’s skills and knowledge.

Famous judges

Some judges who are regulars at the larger English or American dog shows become well-known among dog show participants and breeders and gain respect from large audiences for their ability to recognise good examples of the breeds that they judge.

Revealed the || Tippit

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 25th, 2008

Tippit is a Welsh game that dates back hundreds of years and similar games are played in parts of Spain, Portugal, Ireland and France.

The Game

The game is played using a small coin. Two teams of three face each other across a table and toss the coin for who goes first. The winning team put their hands under the table and move the coin unseen between the three pairs of hands. When ready the centre player knocks three times on the underside of the table and all three pairs of clenched fists (one containing the coin) are placed on the table. The opposing team, who can confer, must then find the coin in the following manner.

The person who is trying to find the Tippit can give only two kinds of order. In each case he must touch the hand in question.

“Take your left/right hand away” - in which case the person named opens the hand mentioned and if the coin is not there puts the hand by their side.

Or if they think they can guess where the Tippit is - “Tippit in your left/right”. In which case the fist mentioned has to be opened to reveal the Tippit - or not!

If the Tippit is revealed after a “Take away…” order then the team hiding the Tippit have won the round. They score one point and get to hide the Tippit amongst themselves again.

If the “Tippit in…” order is given and the Tippit is NOT in the fist mentioned, then the searcher has lost and the team with the Tippit score a point and get to hide it over again - once they have revealed who really had it all along.

If the Tippit is revealed in a “Tippit in…” order then the team searching for the Tippit wins the coin. They score no points but get the opportunity to hide the coin.

Games are usually played until one team reaches a score of 11.

There are minor regional variations in command words and game length but these rules remain essentially the same wherever the game is played.

Game Tactics

The point of the game is that the team hiding the Tippit wants to make the opposing team guess the wrong fist. The game gets very tactical particularly in choosing in which hand to place the tippit and particularly skillful players play like good poker players, hiding their emotions or even trying to mislead their opponents using facial gestures, body language and verbal banter. The team guessing can often make an inexperienced player reveal the whereabouts by staring into their eyes or even visually examining hand positions.

Where is it played

The game is still played in the pubs of mid Wales particularly around Rhayader, parts of Herefordshire / Gloucestershire and by adult leaders in some Wigan scout groups on jamboree weekends. A world championship is held in mid Wales each year.

Magicweek profile || Developmental profile

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 24th, 2008

A developmental profile is a standardized psychodynamic diagnostic instrument for assessing clinically relevant personality characteristics. It is based on the clinical observation that adult personality characteristics often bear a considerable similarity to the behavioural patterns of early childhood. Thus the psychoanalytical developmental theories and the classification of behaviour are integrated in the developmental profile. The developmental profile is a matrix consisting of 10 developmental levels (horizontal rows) and nine developmental levels (vertical columns). Each line describes various categories of behaviour and for each line there are various phases in the development of the psychosocial capacities. The lowest six levels refer to maladaptive behaviour. The information for the developmental profile is obtained using a semi-structured interview that explores the patient’s habitual behaviour during the previous decade. A developmental profile can be made using a registration protocol. The information from filling in the developmental profile provides guidelines with respect to the goals of treatment and the manner in which they can be pursued. It can also be useful in understanding the behaviour of a patient.

Moved || Portland Rockies

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 22nd, 2008

The Portland Rockies were a minor-league baseball team that played in Portland, Oregon from 1994-2000. They were a single-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Their name and logo mimicked the mountain theme of the Colorado club, even though Portland is not located in the Rocky Mountains. A rose was added to the Portland team’s cap logo to signify Portland’s nickname, the “Rose City”.

The Rockies (previously located in Bend, Oregon as the Bend Rockies) moved into Civic Stadium (now known as PGE Park) when the venerable Portland Beavers were moved to Salt Lake City, Utah by then-owner Joe Buzas in 1994. The Rockies played in the short-season Northwest League and had some success, including a league championship in 1997. Although few single-A teams play in cities as large as Portland, the Rockies were able to maintain local interest in baseball.

In 2000, PGE Park was renovated and a new incarnation of the AAA Beavers moved into the stadium in 2001. The Rockies moved to Pasco, Washington where they became the Tri-City Dust Devils.

Notable former Rockies include current MLB players Chone Figgins, Juan Pierre, Clint Barmes, Brad Hawpe, Jake Westbrook,Garrett Atkinsand Jason Franklin.

Circle before he || Hypotrochoid

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 22nd, 2008

A hypotrochoid is a roulette traced by a point attached to a circle of radius r rolling around the inside of a fixed circle of radius R, where the point is a distance d from the center of the interior circle.

The parametric equations for a hypotrochoid are:

<math>x = (R - r)\cos\theta + d\cos\left({R - r \over r}\theta\right)</math>
<math>y = (R - r)\sin\theta - d\sin\left({R - r \over r}\theta\right)</math>

Special cases include the hypocycloid with d = r and the ellipse with R = 2r.

The classic Spirograph toy traces out hypotrochoid and epitrochoid curves.

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 21st, 2008

Extreme wheelbarrow, or ‘wheelbarrow freestyle’, (a term popularised by the website www.wheelbarrowfreestyle.com) is an Extreme sport. It is particularly popular in the UK, where you get a wheelbarrow and perform various tricks with it. For example: standing the wheelbarrow, (or ‘barrow’ as it is called during extreme wheelbarrow), on its nose, then standing on the legs is called a nose stall. There are many other possible ‘extreme tricks’ in common use today, one of the more common being grinding, otherwise known as grindleying.
During this trick, any part of the barrow can be used to grind a hand rail or similar. The wheel axle is a particularly good spot.

Tricks and almost all || Sleeper (yo-yo trick)

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 20th, 2008

The Sleeper, or Throwdown is one of the most common yo-yo tricks. It is a required state before many other tricks can be performed. The essence of the trick is that the yo-yoer throws the yo-yo with a very pronounced wrist action so that when the yo-yo reaches the end of the string it spins in place rather than rolling back up the string to the thrower’s hand. While the yo-yo is in the “sleeping” state at the end of the string, the yo-yoer can then execute other tricks like “around the world” or the more complex “rock the baby.” When the yo-yoer decides to end the “sleeping” state, he/she merely jerks the wrist and the yo-yo “catches” the string and rolls back up to the hand. Most current players use ball-bearing yo-yos with low response, requiring a “bind” for the yo-yo to return.

Scottish magician. || Cabinet escape

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 17th, 2008

The Cabinet Escape is the classic escapology trick, where the magician is trapped in a cabinet and required to escape from it. Often, the magician can be bound in handcuffs, rope, and sacks before being placed in the cabinet.

Method

Almost inevitably the cabinet is a trick - this is evident from the fact that you will almost never see a trick of this type end with the magician actually stepping out of the cabinet in a normal way. One simple possibility is that the back panel of the cabinet contains a door through which the magician can escape; to prevent this door from being discovered under inspection, a catch is arranged which prevents the door from opening while the front door is open.

Thus, the magician can be bound and tied by whatever means. The cabinet can then be inspected: if a stooge inspector is used, the front door can be closed and then the stooge (out of sight) can pretend to check the inside to confirm there are no doors. If a member of the public is invited to check the cabinet, in the rare event that they express a wish to close the front door with themselves inside, they can easily be dissuaded (”we don’t want you getting trapped in there!”).

A more sophisticated catch can be devised also; for example, one that requires the front door to have been opened once and then closed again can allow the inspection of the closed cabinet; one that requires the front door to have been opened and closed twice can indeed allow a public inspector to be trapped inside the cabinet for a moment.

When the magician enters the cabinet, an accomplice steps out from directly behind the cabinet, hidden from audience view by the cabinet. The magician is sealed in the cabinet. Immediately they lean their weight against the back wall, falling out of the back of the cabinet with the noise hidden by a drum roll or similar effect. The accomplice can then unseal the cabinet and carry the magician away (again remaining directly behind the cabinet and so out of sight) to have any binding ropes cut or handcuffs unlocked.

Objective Productions. || Parfocal lens

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 16th, 2008

A parfocal lens is a microscope objective or camera lens that stays approximately in focus when the magnification is changed. For example, if a microscope is switched from a low power objective (10×) to a higher power one (40× or 43×), the object stays in focus. Similarly, in professional cameras (as well as some compact ones, such as the EX-S770), the object remains in focus as the zoom changes.

A parfocal lens is not present in most light microscopes, although higher quality light microscopes may possess one.

Entitled The || Statutory holdback

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 14th, 2008

Statutory holdback or Contract holdback is the legal requirement found in most common law jurisdictions’ contract law that requires an owner engaging a contractor to hold a particular percentage of payment for a stipulated length of time. This is done to ensure that any and all parties working on a contract are paid. Any subcontractors who have worked on the project are entitled to payment based on quantum meruit, and the courts will allow a lien against any property which their work has improved, should they not receive payment. In order to expediate and simplify the overall process, holdbacks can be claimed against by any subcontractors who are denied payment by the contractor who employed them on the project. Under these conditions, the subcontractor may collect payment from the owner, who then reduces his final payment (ie: when releasing what remains of the holdback) to the contractor. Note that the subcontractor is entitled to payment based on quantum meruit, irrespective of whether or not the subcontractor has privity of contract with the owner.

In some jurisdictions, there are two or more holdbacks. For example, Ontario Canada employs both a basic and a finishing holdback. The basic holdback is 10% of the total project cost, and is released after 45 days from substantial completion of a project. The finishing holdback is 10% of the value of work still left to be completed after substantial completion of the project, and is released only after 45 days from completion of the project.

Bongo Country is referred to an entry in the All Saints, Poplar, parish register of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The entry records the baptism of Samuel Crighton, son of William Fernandez who claimed to be King of the Bongo Country on the Western Coast of Africa.

There is no known kingdom of that name on the West African coast and no evidence as to which of several inland places called ‘Bongo’ to which it might refer.

Of magic tricks. || Derek Dingle

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the May 13th, 2008

Derek Dingle (1937-2004) was a renowned close-up English magician.

Life

As many magicians before him, Dingle’s interest in magic began with a box of magic tricks when he was about eight years old. It was on joining the Royal Air Force however, that he met another magician James Gregory of Kenilworth, England, and spent 18 months with him, 12 months in Hong Kong where they made up trick packs of cards for magic dealer W. Y. Chu. During this time Derek borrowed James’s collection of magic magazines such as The Magic Circular and The Linking Ring and his interest grew.

Dingle spent a year working in magic shops in Hong Kong, during which Dingle was practicing magic sleights with coins and billiard balls.

After leaving the army and spending a few years in Canada, Dingle moved to New York City, where he became friends with many more magicians, and where his fame grew.

Magic

Dingle was known in the magic world for his technical ability. Dingle was very proficient with difficult sleight of hand technique with playing cards and coins. Among fellow magicians, he was well known for his skill in executing The Pass (a playing card sleight where a deck of playing cards is swiftly and invisibly cut in the hands). He could perform expert card moves with no hesitation.

Dingle has magic published in several publications and videos. His most popular publication is probably The Collected Works of Derek Dingle (Richard Kaufman, 1982), which has been out of print for many years now, but has recently been re-published by Richard Kaufman.
His first main released to the Magic World was a small book written by Harry Lo
