The pair || Hoogsteen base pair

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the January 31st, 2008

A Hoogsteen base pair is a minor variation of base-pairing in nucleic acids such as the A•T pair. In this manner, two nucleobases on each strand can be held together by hydrogen bonds in the major groove. A Hoogsteen base pair applies the N7 position of the purine base (as a hydrogen bond acceptor) and C6 amino group (as a donor), which bind the Watson-Crick (N3–N4) face of the pyrimidine base.

Hoogsteen pairs have quite different properties from Watson-Crick base pairs. The angle between the two glycosylic bonds (ca. 80° in the A• T pair) is larger and the C1′–C1′ distance (ca. 860 pm or 8.6 Å) is smaller than in the regular geometry. In some cases, called reversed Hoogsteen base pairs, one base is rotated 180° with respect to the other.

This non-Watson-Crick base-pairing allows the third strands to wind around the duplexes, which are assembled in the Watson-Crick pattern, and form triple-stranded helices such as (poly(dA)•2poly(dT)) and (poly(rC)•2poly(rC)). It can be also seen in three-dimensional structures of transfer RNA.

This term is named for Karst Hoogsteen, who, in 1963, first recognized the potential for these unusual pairings (quoted from Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry by David Nelson and Michael Cox, 4th edition, published in 2005 by Freeman).

Shows || KVHW

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the January 31st, 2008

KVHW was an American rock band that was active and toured nationally from January 1998 through December 1999. The band’s name came from the last names of its four members: Steve Kimock (guitar), Bobby Vega (bass), Alan Hertz (drums), and Ray White (vocals and guitar). However, due to personal issues, Ray White was replaced by other musicians for some shows: Terry Haggerty replaced him from May 13, 1999 through July 5, 1999, and Ike Willis and Chip Roland sat in for some shows without White in December 1999. Jimmy Herring also filled in for several shows following White’s departure. Haggerty continued to play with the band through October 3, 1999. White was kicked out of the band after failing to show up for the December 17, 1999 show.

The band’s repertoire mostly consisted of original songs, songs from Steve Kimock’s previous bands, and a number of covers of Frank Zappa songs.

Series || McCoy (TV series)

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the January 31st, 2008

McCoy was the title of an American action-adventure television series that aired on NBC during the 1975-1976 season.

The series starred Tony Curtis as a con man who “out-cons” bad guys in order to steal back their ill-gotten gains and return the loot to its rightful owners. As such, the series bears resemblances to the then-recent film The Sting, as well as to the contemporary series Switch and the British literary character Simon Templar. Co-starring with Curtis was Roscoe Lee Browne.

The series was produced in the format of two-hour telefilms, that were broadcast as part of the NBC Sunday Mystery Movie as one of several rotating series that would air once a month. Other series involved in the scheme were Columbo, McCloud, and McMillan and Wife. However, McCoy failed to garner the same ratings as its fellow programs and was cancelled after four episodes were broadcast. At least one novel based upon the series was published in the United Kingdom.
